Recently I looked at a deviant's tutorial on how to draw large characters, particularly of the female persuasion. Something they said made me twitch, for a more than a couple of reasons. The words they used in reference to fetish were "Dehumanizing" and "Gross misunderstanding of the fat female body".
I find this view of fetish and fetish artists rather tone-deaf. Most fetishes, objectively speaking, are not at all dehumanizing, though there are more than a few I would definitely count as such...(I'm looking at you scat and vore...Ugh...). Fetish may be the sexualization of something that someone finds sexually arousing, but to call fetishes in general dehumanizing is, in my honest opinion, a very "black & white" way of looking at things.
Except as any person who bothers to think about things knows, and as an artist should know: In the real world, there is no such thing as pure black or pure white. Just like the shadows and highlights in real life are not shades of white or black, but shades of color: fetishes are not, objectively, dehumanizing just by their very existence. Neither are the works of fetish artists as such. Like opinions, everyone has a fetish of some kind or another, and everyones fetishes are different, and exist to varying degrees.
As anyone can tell by looking at my favorites, you can tell what my fetish is, but the thing I think most people don't understand is that fetish arts of the kind you see a lot of fetish artists do are most often of fictional characters who don't exist. People look at some fetish artists work and get extremely offended, to which I ask myself: "Why do these people react to these works as if the characters being depicted are real people?" No harm comes to anyone cause the characters normally have no resemblance to any actual person or persons, not even mentioning the fact that these characters aren't really and live in fictionalized worlds, where physical laws and attributes can be bent or even broken should an author or artist so desire.
More often I find however is that fetish artists are much more aware of anatomy that this person realizes as well. "-if they understand anatomy so well, then why do they do this then?" The answer is simple: because they can and will, and because it gives them a thrill. Are there fetish artists out there with a sub-par understanding of anatomy? That is a certainty, are they the majority? I have no data, but by my experience, the answer is a flat and firm "no".
